Happy Halloween!!
(or All Saints Day or All Hallows Eve or…whatever!)
This morning, as we sipped our Pumpkin Spice coffees, my wife and I reminisced about our ‘weens past – back in those good ol’ days.
Like the year she was the costume prize winner in her class for her Old Lady outfit – a mom’s creation straight from the family attic and complete with a rubber face and wooden cane. Or the year I was one of Blackbeard, the Pirate‘s minions – a family closets special with my grandfather’s red bandana around my head, my mother’s scarf as both a sash and scabbard for my dad’s handmade, wooden sword. My old jeans – the legs shredded, and my black Converse All-Stars rounded out that costume ensemble.
(The costume department at MGM was never as innovative as our pumped–kin were!)
And we told Trick or Treat stories – none scary and not hairy – just fond memories of quirky neighbors or best candy neighbors or the neighbors who gave quarters instead of sugar-highs. Of her mom dressing herself (and them) all in leopard outfits one year for the neighborhood prowl. Of my mom and dad and uncles and aunts all walking with us just to wave to the neighbors or have a chat or a quick cup of coffee or cocoa on their porches – while we, the ‘denizens of the night’ chafed at the bit to move it along.
We extolled our greatest hauls, our favorite treats, and lamented our parents picking through our booty for snacks or for those items appearing on only their forbidden lists.
We talked of pumpkin face designs, and bonfires, and baked pumpkin seeds, and hayrack rides, and those spooky Gurley Candle decorations – all moments of memories, both sweet and bittersweet.
Thanks for reading along, and we hope you’ve shared some of your time-traveled memories of Halloweens past today –
And enjoyed a smile in remembrance.
Food for thought.
