Where did the U.S. of us go?

We talked today – my wife and I – while we slowly sipped our coffees – savoring the taste, the smell, the camaraderie of a ritual, and the warmth of it all.

Togetherness – regardless. Commonalities shared and differences respected. The inside of who we are, not the facade of who we wish.

US.

But not U.S. That one is gone. Long gone. When did it leave? We don’t know; it was too incremental – an election here, a law there, a job not done, another job lost, a desire for more, a respect for less.

Then gone.

Long gone. The inside of who we are.

All that remains now is the facade of who we wish.
